About Us
We all enter life as a blank canvas. With love, creativity, and discipline, each of us can become a masterpiece.
A Home Away from Home
Life Pieces to Masterpieces is a safe sanctuary for hundreds of African American young men and boys growing up in Washington, DC’s most poverty-stricken and volatile neighborhoods. In a city with the highest rate of poverty in the United States, there is an urgent need for this loving and supportive environment for turning expressions of fear and anger into hope and joy.
More than 90 percent of our apprentices live in Wards 7 and 8 in Washington, DC. They represent the more than 45,000 predominantly African American children under age 18 that live in the area. Research shows that these two wards are underserved and plagued by a myriad of social, physical, and mental health programs including gang activity, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, violence, and incarceration. These problems are compounded by a lack of positive male role models. 75 percent of households are headed by single females.
Our Own Effective Curriculum
Since 1996 Life Pieces To Masterpieces has been helping boys and young men address these challenges and develop a healthy sense of self and positive self-direction by using our Four-Part Human Development System (HDS).
This formula ensures that our boys are awakened to a sense of purpose, discover their innate creative abilities, and learn that their thoughts, words, and actions determine their destiny. Through the Human Development System, apprentices are given the tools to reach their fullest potential.
Our Programs
Our after school and weekend programs provide apprentices with daily homework assistance, leadership development and meditation. We connect our apprentices to the broader world for career and learning opportunities.
